かつてLimeWireのデベロッパーでもあったAdam Fiskは、今週、新たなブラウザベースのP2Pサービス Littleshootを公式にローンチした。Mashableは先週金曜に同サイトの素晴らしいレビューを掲載しているし、Lifehackerもこの話題を取り上げたことでかなりの関心を集めている。先週後半、私はロサンゼルスでFiskに会い、P2P Blogのためにショートインタビューを行なった。

Littleshootは簡単に言えば、オープンソースSIPプロトコルをベースにしたブラウザベースのP2Pサービスである。また、同サービスは他の複数のメディアサービス、たとえばYouTubeやYahooビデオサーチ、LimeWire/Gnutellaなどの検索、ダウンロード機能も提供している。

同サービスはYahooのFlashメディアプレイヤーとの統合を特徴としており、それによってダウンロードしているMP3をそのままブラウザ上で再生できたりもする。また、同サービスのある興味深い技術的側面としては、同サービスがGoogle App Engineをかなり利用しているというところにあるだろう。 また、現在FiskはTwitter経由でのメディアファイル共有を可能にするTwitterとの統合にも取り組んでいる。

これ以上のことはインタビューで。ただ、コーヒーショップの雑音が気になっちゃうかもしれないけれど。いいピンマイクでも買わないとなぁ。

うーん、これはテストしてみたい。ちなみにFiskのベンチャーLast Bambooのサイトには、このLittleshootについて記述されている箇所があり、同サービスは2006年5月に初めてベータ版がリリースされたとのこと（当時のP2P Blogの記事）。そして、このサービスについては、

一応は現在リリースされている形態に近いけれど、現時点ではソーシャルな部分はそれほど強調されてはいないように思える。

LittleShoot uses centralized search to quickly search all the files available on the network.

When you click to download a file, you actually get different parts of that file from all the other users on the network who have any part of it. With LittleShoot, you get files from the most efficient sources available. If there's someone sitting next to you in a cafe with the file you want, LittleShoot immediately recognizes that, and you start getting the file at lightning speed from that person. We're also working on keeping traffic within ISPs. This means if you're on Time Warner's New York network, you'll first access sources also on Time Warner's New York network.

There's No Waiting

With LittleShoot, you never need to wait forever for your files to upload to our servers. They just stay right on your computer, with you in control. Your computer becomes the source for the file.

Safe and Secure

Only the files you specifically publish are available on the network. All of you other files are safe and invisible, and you can easily unpublish a file at any time. We never have a copy on our servers, so when you unpublish the file, you're just removing the link to it. You control your content.

簡単にまとめると、検索は中央サーバが担う、検索結果はプラグインがキャッシュする、コンテンツは分散ダウンロードされる、（なるべく）近接したユーザからダウンロードする、コンテンツはサーバにアップロードされることなくユーザが配布する、配布の停止はユーザがコントロールできる、というところかしら。

近接したユーザからダウンロードするってのは、同一ISP、同一地域をより選択するようになってるってことなのかしら？あと、コンテンツへのコントローラビリティが担保されるかのような書かれ方がなされているが、いったん他人の手に渡ったコンテンツへのコントローラビリティは失われると思うんだけど、どうなんでしょうね。あとブラウザベースのファイル共有ってことだけど、ブラウザを立ち上げている最中にのみ公開されるのか、それともブラウザを閉じてもバックグラウンドでプログラムが走り続けるのか、ちょっとよくわからない。

とりあえず、近日中に試してみます。
